Lagos State Athletics Association Hosts District 5 Secondary School Athletics Competition

Lagos State Athletics Association Hosts District 5 Secondary School Athletics Competition at Navy Sports Complex

In its continued effort to develop grassroots sports and nurture young athletic talents, the Lagos State Athletics Association is hosting a highly anticipated District 5 Secondary School Athletics Competition tomorrow, January 29th, at the Nigerian Navy Sports Complex, Ojo, Lagos. The event, spearheaded by the Association's visionary Chairman, Dr. Solomon Alao, aims to discover potential champions and reinforce Lagos' reputation as Nigeria's Centre of Excellence in sports.

At a well-attended technical meeting held earlier today, the organizing committee finalized plans to ensure the success of the competition. The Technical Director, Mrs. Funmi Otegbeye, outlined the competition's scope, stating:

> "The competition is among secondary schools in the six districts of the state. Tomorrow's event will feature schools in District 5, Badagry. We will be hosting events such as the 100m, 200m, 400m (male and female), shot put (senior and junior), and the 800m for senior athletes. This initiative is geared towards identifying future champions."

Mrs. Otegbeye highlighted that this competition is part of the broader Lagos State Secondary School District Athletics Competition. The program’s first leg, held in 2024 in Ikorodu for District 2 schools, marked a successful beginning to the Association's grassroots development plans. Tomorrow’s event in District 5 promises to build on that momentum, uncovering new athletic talents who may become future stars for the state and the nation.

The Performance Director, Coach Abiodun Ibrahim, alongside Coach Olapade Lawal (Head Coach), and Mr. Billy Disu (Competition Development Lead), have been instrumental in designing a platform to ensure that every athlete gets an opportunity to shine. Their collective commitment underscores the Association's goal of nurturing young athletes who embody discipline, resilience, and excellence.

The event will feature thrilling competitions across the junior and senior categories, including sprint events and field events like the shot put. The athletes are set to "Unleash their Potential" and bring their best to the track and field tomorrow.

This initiative reaffirms the commitment of the Lagos State Athletics Association to creating opportunities for young athletes and building a robust pipeline of talent for future local and international competitions.

Residents of Lagos and sports enthusiasts are invited to witness the energy and excitement as young athletes from District 5 compete to make their mark in the world of athletics.

Stay tuned for live updates and results from the competition.
