Nigeria Invites 90 Athletes to Camp for CAA U20/U18 Championships in Abeokuta
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has invited 90 junior athletes to a national camp as preparations intensify for the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U20 and U18 Championships, scheduled to hold in Abeokuta, Ogun State from July 16 to 20.
The camp will span three weeks and is designed to fine-tune the athletes' physical condition, improve technical performance, and build synergy, especially in the relay teams as Nigeria aims for a top finish on home soil.
Speaking on the development, AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa said the selected athletes will begin training immediately, with trials to be conducted later during the camp to determine the final squad.
“These athletes will be invited to camp, and training will commence. Trials will be done after some time to enable the coaches to choose those that will represent Nigeria,” Chief Okowa said.
He added that while the federation is aiming for a strong showing at the championships, the broader goal is to give young athletes valuable exposure and experience at the continental level.
“This is an opportunity for our future stars to compete against the best on the continent, and also learn the discipline and commitment required at this level,” he said.
The 2025 edition of the CAA U20/U18 Championships will be the first major outing under the current AFN board. As hosts, Nigeria is hoping to leverage home advantage and inspire a new generation of champions.
