AFN Unveils Selection Criteria for Tokyo 2025 World Championships

10 August 2025, The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially announced the guidelines for selecting athletes to represent the country at the World Athletics Championships scheduled for next month in Tokyo, Japan.

In a statement signed by the AFN Secretary-General, Israel Inwang, and released on Sunday, the federation stated that only athletes who meet the World Athletics Entry Standard or are ranked within the top 20 in the World Ranking Quota will make the team.

According to the AFN, the new criteria, effective immediately, are designed to ensure that only committed and high-performing athletes don the Nigerian colours, while also promoting team spirit, discipline, and professionalism.

“All stakeholders are urged to ensure full compliance with these directives,” the statement read. “The AFN remains committed to supporting dedicated athletes who demonstrate both athletic excellence and professional conduct.”

The federation noted that athletes still have until August 24, 2025 to meet the qualification requirements. After this date, the **final team list for Tokyo will be released.

For enquiries or clarifications, the AFN Secretariat in Abuja will be open to receive them within the next seven days, either in person or via the official email address: [ngr@mf.worldathletics.org](mailto:ngr@mf.worldathletics.org).
