Ola High School Girls’ Cross Country Team Secures Historic Victory at Henry County Championship
The Ola High School girls’ cross country team made a remarkable start to the championship season with a first-place team victory at the Henry County 5km Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 5, 2024. This win marks the school’s first county title in over a decade, an achievement made even more impressive by the athletes’ personal best performances and collective team effort.
The team, coached by Nigeria’s former National Record holder Gbolahan Fatuga (United Unattached Athletics), in collaboration with Coach Andrews from Ola High School, delivered outstanding individual performances. Leading the charge was Suri Lawrence, who finished in 3rd place with a time of 21:47, shaving 8 seconds off her previous personal record (PR) and securing a spot on the 1st Team All-County.
Her sister, Jade Lawrence, followed closely in 4th place, finishing the race in 22:17 and also earning a 1st Team All-County selection. Another strong performance came from Rayah Arnold, who clinched 5th place with a time of 22:42, improving her PR by an impressive 17 seconds and rounding out the trio of 1st Team All-County honorees for Ola High School.
Bailey Morrison finished in 14th place with a time of 24:47, achieving a new PR by 18 seconds and securing a spot on the 2nd Team All-County.
With these stellar performances, the Ola High School girls’ team secured first place overall with a score of 42 points, bringing the long-awaited championship title back to the school. This historic victory sets a promising tone for the rest of their season, showcasing the athletes’ hard work and the successful collaboration between their coaches.
The win not only represents a triumph for the team but also serves as an inspiration for the school community, as Ola High School reclaims its position as a competitive force in county cross country.
