AFN Clears Air on Nse Uko's Whereabout Violation

AFN Clears Air on Nse Uko’s Whereabouts Violation

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has formally responded to public reactions surrounding the recent two-year ban imposed on Imaobong Nse Uko by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics for anti-doping violations.

Nse Uko was sanctioned for three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period, a breach of anti-doping regulations. The AFN has, however, clarified that the responsibility for whereabouts filing lies solely with the athlete.

“Elite athletes are required to submit accurate and up-to-date whereabouts information quarterly. This includes their home address, email, phone number, overnight accommodation details, and daily activity schedules such as training and school locations with timeframes,” the Federation stated.

According to the AFN, Nse Uko’s failure to fulfill this obligation led to the sanction, which will run until July 2026.

“Providing whereabouts is not only a rule, it’s a right for clean athletes. It's about protecting the integrity of sport. Testing can be conducted by National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs), International Federations (IFs), and Major Event Organizations (MEOs). It is important to note that the AFN is not mandated to conduct or determine whereabouts testing,” the Federation clarified.

The AFN further reiterated its commitment to drug education and advocacy. Through its anti-doping department led by Professor Ken Anugweje, the Federation regularly organizes seminars to educate athletes, coaches, and officials on anti-doping rules, including whereabouts filing and Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs). The most recent seminar was held during the Gateway Games 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“Athlete discipline is critical. We constantly inform athletes through our communication channels, and Nse Uko received multiple reminders from both the AFN and the NADC. While the AFN offers assistance to athletes facing challenges with the system, the onus remains on the athlete to complete and update their whereabouts filing on time,” the statement added.

While the Federation distances itself from claims that it failed to support Nse Uko, it remains firm in promoting a clean sports culture and urges athletes to take full responsibility for compliance.

“We are calling on the media to help amplify our anti-doping campaigns and awareness programs. Supporting this initiative will go a long way in protecting the integrity of Nigerian athletics.”

The AFN encourages all athletes to engage with the WADA and AIU Clean Sport Campaigns, and reiterates its dedication to upholding global anti-doping standards.
